But when a software update detects the unauthorized repair, the machine turns on her, locks the cab, and drives toward a cliff. Harper barely escapes the crash, only to learn the manufacturer is out to make an example of her.

As he escapes with the lost dog, Kenzo is confronted by his client, who turns out to be an organ broker working for a wealthy client. Although tempted by profit, Kenzo chooses not to hand over the dog and vanishes the prize for good.

A person on a government support program is given no choice but to join a new self-employment initiative, which will make them part of the growing gig economy. The job involves having a mesh hub implanted under their skin to create ad hoc communication networks for clients. At first, they are reluctant but soon discover the gig has many advantages until they find themselves a pawn in a much larger scheme.

While tracking down a scam artist who disappeared with 200 million dollars, a freelance insurance investigator stumbles across an online video by the leader of a group called the Free Energy Coalition. She suspects the man in the video is her missing suspect and goes to a Free Energy conference to find out, but is quickly sucked into the murky world of conspiracy theories which claim the laws of thermodynamics have been faked to prevent the world from discovering perpetual motion machines which can generate free energy.

Camila, a wannabe actor desperate to pursue a career on the stage, indentures herself to a theatre company which entertains tourists in low earth orbit. She plays a modern version of the famous 18th-century pirate Anne Bonny and what passes for their act is mostly an excuse to squeeze their captive audiences for tips. But during a performance for a wealthy eight-year-old she begins to realize they may not be acting, and as with the pirates of old, behind their backs one of her crewmates is willing to sell them down the river for a larger percentage of the take.
